Usually written as CO2e, a carbon credit represents one less metric ton of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there otherwise would have been. They are retired permanently once purchased and that credit cannot be used again.
The reduction or prevention of emissions through external activities that are intended to compensate for an actors own emissions. Typically done through the purchase of carbon credits from verified offset projects. These projects can also have significant environmental and social co-benefits on the local communities and wildlife.
In order to achieve the 1.5C Paris ambition, the world needs substantial emission reductions. A clear mitigation hierarchy for companies: reducing emissions comes first, carbon credits are an important complement.
Large, high-integrity, voluntary carbon markets (VCM) play an important role in mitigating climate change by enabling billions of dollars flowing to projects that help avoid, reduce, remove and sequester CO2 emissions. In order to accelerate climate action, we need investments into both avoidance / reduction as well as removal / sequestration credits.
Raising the price of carbon credits will help facilitate the effort in the reduction of direct emissions.
Once you have purchased a carbon credit Treehouse will immediately retire it from the registry. You will receive from Treehouse the relevant certification highlighting the amount and your company name, that will be displayed on the public Verra registry.
Treehouse is on a mission to improve the transparency, accountability and efficiency of the voluntary carbon market. The price of the carbon offset is set by the project developers in order to maximise the amount of funding going back into the project and community, as well as the forest monitoring and management. Treehouse charges a 10% fee paid by the buyers to cover platform development and administration costs.
Treehouse only offers credits directly from the project owners. Therefore, when you buy from us 100% of the carbon credit price goes back to the project owner.
The Treehouse platform only partners with projects that are Verra VCS verified for both Carbon and Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB). https://verra.org/about-verra/who-we-are/
